To me, I find that marketing anything is much like doing anything else. As
I remind my marketing students and clients: “marketing aint rocket
science!” With anything in life, I believe that it basically comes down to
three things: attitude, recognizing opportunity, and taking action.

For your business to prosper during tough times, you need to want it to
prosper. And, you need to want it to prosper so much that this will cause
you to revisit your marketing plan, revise it, or create one if you haven’t
done so. You’ll find yourself spending a bit more time on getting to know
your products, your competition, and most of all, your customer. Your
attitude must reflect your sincere desire to serve your customer. Tough
times calls for being serious about marketing, communicating, and your
customer service. Are you serious about doing something, or like many,
are you only bemoaning the times? If you said yes about being serious,
look at each of the suggestions below and write out at least 5 ideas in
how you can (and will in the next week) do them.

1.        Tell your customer you really want their business
2.        Show your customer that you really want their business
3.        Ask your customer for their business
4.        Reward your customer for their business
5.        Reward yourself for doing this

I’ve heard it said that with every adversity comes the seed of opportunity.
I remember Zig Ziglar states that he has never seen a time when things
were so tough that a lot of people did not succeed in a big way, and he
had never seen a time so good that at least a couple of people didn’t
manage to screw things up (my paraphrase). Keep your attitude in
check. It is always the POW’s who knew they’d survive who did survive.
Maintain the attitude that there is opportunity all around you, and you will
survive, and thrive!

As you are waiting for people to walk in your door or visit your website to
purchase something from your business, use this time constructively.
Read about your products, service, and industry. Study what other
industries are doing. Improve your people skills, and educate yourself in
the areas of time management,
customer service, and marketing.

ADVERTISING “SMARTS” DURING TOUGH TIMES:

For some odd reason, many business people choose to decrease their advertising or halt
much of their marketing efforts altogether during so called “tough times”. I’ve never
understood this over the past 25 years I’ve been in marketing, and of course when I’ve
mentioned it, because I’m in marketing, sometimes my words seem to fall on suspicious
ears because perhaps they thought I was more concerned with lining my own pockets at
the time. Since in reality I can’t line my pockets without first helping you line yours, let’s
discuss some ways to take some of the “smart” (pain) out of promoting your products,
services, and ideas during tough times and translate it into “smart” (wise use of
knowledge) with your advertising and marketing.
